Savannah Mayor Van Johnson has issued a shelter in home order for everyone living in the city limits to help combat the coronavirus outbreak.

The announcement was made during a briefing Tuesday morning.

“If you’re not working and you’re not shopping for groceries, please stay home,” Johnson said. “We’re not shutting the city down.”

Essential businesses will be allowed to continue operating.

According to a statement from the mayor, those who are homeless are strongly encouraged to seek shelter.

The order goes into effect at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday and is expected to end April 8, unless changes need to be made.

“I believe we will be OK,” Johnson said. “Savannah has always been able to persevere.”
